We had good class discussions on Amendment One and the Constitutional issues involved. However, the arguments in favor of the amendment seemed to be biblical in nature and not constitutional. Why do people “hate” gays? Does religion condone discrimination and hatred?

I think people “hate” gays because a lot of families see it as morally wrong. They see being gay is a disease. The hate towards gays, I believe comes from a long line of tradition, one of those bad traditions called ignorance and discrimination. It’s like there has to be a population to hate or things can’t function. That is sad, but it seems to be true. From Protestants in England, to Hispanics now, to Blacks in the 60s, to the Hutus and Tutis, to Muslims and Christians when Christians were on their crusades. The history of hate seems to repeat itself. Society has outcast gays since there was such a thing. It had to be kept on the “hush-hush” because it was seen as so bad. So the secrets that stemmed from the name caused tension and bad vibes. It seems today that religion has become to stepping stone for why people give reason for their hate or dislike of gays. I’m not an expert of religion or anything like that, but you can say the reference to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is that they were destroyed by God because of the evils of those cities, homosexuality was one of those evils. “Leviticus 18:22 King James Version (KJV) 22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” and “Deuteronomy 22:5 King James Version (KJV) 5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” But, the Bible also says, “Galatians 5:14 King James Version (KJV) 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”, Luke 10:27 King James Version (KJV) 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”, and “Proverbs 6:16-19 King James Version (KJV) 16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” So to those who say it’s not right to be gay, well, it is also not right to cast judgement. The Bible says BOTH. Whatever side people choose, everyone will have to answer to only God on Judgement Day. Everyone does secular and immoral things in their lives one time or another. No sin is lesser than the other. To end this argument, No, I do not think the law should have a say so in what goes on in peoples homes.

Honestly, it seems that any kind of religion condones any type of hatred, or discrimination. Now, they may say that homosexuality is “wrong”, but i’ve never seen anything saying to be cruel towards a person about their sexual preference. And with a religion like Christianity it’s also “wrong” to hate. In which hatred leads to people being involved in hate crimes and etc. So of course, hate is something that should never be felt towards a person. And of course, not everyone “hates” gays. Some people are just simply not too comfortable with it because they were brought up thinking that it’s this oh so terrible thing. In which what’s puzzling is society’s opinions influences other’s opinions when they havent even rationalized it themselves. When things start to get real bad is when antigay violence starts to come into play. Now hate is a strong word. To me, to actually hate someone you would have the motive to want to do bodily harm to another person. When a person says that they “hate” gays, they probably really dont mean it because it takes a lot to really hate another person. The title saying “Why Christians Ought to “Hate” Homosexuals” seems to be a little bit of a play on words. Because christians arent meant to hate apparently. But then again, it is a sin and no sin is greater than the other. They’re all equal. But you have there churchs that “hate” going on all day like it’s a good thing to be hateful to a person, which is where hypocrisy is seen. Because no one is really to judge anybody else and say what’s right or wrong. Because sometimes a person needs more than the Bible to back up their opinion because a person may have something greater that can fully prove their point on the views of homosexuality. And with Amendment One, many people thought it was just about gay marriage. Which is a bit ignorant because it also affects mothers and their children, senior citizens, and others. State should not have a say in what type of a person another person marries cause I dont see how that affects the state in an actual kind of way.

Relgion is made by man so by nature it does not naturally condone the act of homosexuality. The correct question is, however, does the bible condone homosexuality? THe answer to that question is yes. The arguement that was made for the passing of amendment one is that the bible says that homosexuality is wrong and is a sin. But the bible also says, Love thy neighbor. The people making these percarious arguements are only reading the portions of the bible that they see fit to use. But, if the people that argued for amend. one are using the bible as the perfect source of law then they should also feel the same way about this. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, {10} Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. So if the people who disgust gay marriage want to call the bible out into fair game then why are the thieves and drunks and the under age kids having sex and the over age people having sex without being married not being treated as harshly as the homosexuals. My idea on this whole situation is, who am i to say that two people should not be allowed to get married and be happy together. The people who voted yes for this amendment are only trying to keep the minority down. Which is ironic because im sure a lot of different ethnic groups voted on this amendment and im sure that a lot of those ethnic groups voted yes. I mean its the biggest historical irony. THis is no different then jim crow laws, laws that did not allow interracial marriage. Its ridiculous.

To be real….I feel that people hate gays because thats the ONE part of the bible that most will just hook on to and its some what the “simplest” sin not to commit. And in my opinion its just some psychological trick for them to confuse them selves as if they are a better “Christian” than the gays…you know somebody has to be the worst sinner than you right???? Also another factor that aides in the hatred of gays…i would say is just tradition and interpretation of the bible. Some people are raised to think that being gay is just morally wrong because the bible said so. The only limitation to that is, the people who actually make this argument, in a way contradicts theirselves by saying that phrase “the bible said so”. As you read this what does it mention??? As many make the argument that gays are just wrong and shouldnt be allowed…what about the theives?? what about the drunks?? These types of sins do not get mentioned because these are the sins that are excepted by the majority of this population their for does not get as much attention as the gay “problem”, but dont you think that if you point out one thing god said and plan to act so stirct towards it…way not pull out everything he said and put it to action??? Why do people hate gays?
-Narrow mindedness, ignorance, security, a need for hatred, etc… The list could go on and on. The majority of the population seems to rely on the bible as their reason to “hate” homosexuals, because of ONE quote, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” However, if you were to say to that same person that the bible says they should not curse, eat pork, eat shrimp, or anything else, they would tell you to screw off, and thats just the plain truth. The bible is a MANMADE object. “God” did not sit upon his high throne and scribble down all these rules and regulations for mankind to follow. Instead, a bunch of guys recorded what “God” had whispered into their ear to be holy and righteous. There are people who only make their living off of cows or shrimp, and yet they could be the most devout Christians and we wouldn’t judge them any differently, why? Because its the NORM. No one cares. That’s why it is so hypocritical to “hate” gays because the mighty word of “God”,(or man) says so. Being gay has not yet been accepted by the majority of the population. If it was, there would not be a single issue. Homophobia is not all that different from discriminating blacks(which used to be widely accepted) discriminating against the irish (widely accepted) discriminating against women (widely accepted)..all these were once widely accepted norms, and no one really thought twice about it until that group rose up against the discrimination. What the people in this country, and world, need to do is look back at our past. Look back at people and subjects we used to discriminate against and ask ourselves WHY we are doing it again.
To reiterate my entire point, this quote serves it perfectly…

Just like tattoos and piercings, the more homosexuality is outwardly expressed, the more likely people will be to realize their stupid hatred and accept it, and hopefully make progress, like repealing stupid amendment one.
Oh and the second question, i almost forgot. Does religion condone hatred?
Well obviously, you can pull quotes all day long from the bible that promote love as well as hatred. Once again, the hand of mankind wrote the bible, not the hand of God.Homosexuals often were in hiding way long ago, and someone decided that it should be against god and gods law to be homosexual. It is up to the discretion of the reader to what degree they want to believe what the bible says and how closely they would like to follow it. Personally, i think the bible is a good starting point as to what morals people should form and how to love your neighbors as yourself, but to follow the bible word for word is a bit ridiculous. We would all be walking contradictions in a continuous paradox of arguments.

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” yes, as ms. baskett so kindly pointed out, that is the old testament and we live by new rules in the new testament, but it also talks about it in the new testament. it says “And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.” so as ive said, being gay is wrong. there is no way around it. of course kaleb brought up all the other factors of the bible that someone defending being gay brings up, but we are focused on gay people. those are factors that make us all alike. gays and non gays both do all of the things kaleb mentioned. but what sets us apart is one thing, being gay. it just shouldnt happen. ever.

How does a person’s sexual orientation set them apart, and other thing’s don’t? Thats like going back to when blacks were trying to get equality, whites said that being black set them apart and classified them as a lower caste. Obviously you’d say that black people are Not of a lower caste and there is nothing wrong with it. Its stupid to say that sexuality completely sets people apart.

I think it is wrong to be gay. It does say in the bible that marriage is between a man and a woman. I believe that it is morally wrong, however, I think it is just as morally wrong to hate gays. Hating any group that is different because of their beliefs, language, lifestyle or even skin color is JUST as wrong if not more. The Bible also says to “Love your neighbor as yourself” in Romans. As a Christian, I’ve always been taught in church that no matter what someone is doing wrong that I am against or I believe is wrong, it is my job to help them by teaching them what is in the Bible, and trying to bring them closer to Christianity and salvation, not to hate them and degrade them, and especially not to harass them or take it upon myself to punish them in any way.

The question is why do people hate gays? Well… If I speak for myself I’m going to say that I don’t hate gays but I think it is wrong to be gay. Raised in a Christian family I was taught that one men and one women is the right way to get married. Now a day we see two women or two men’s get married because of LOVE. Indeed no one can tell you who to love or not too but I think if you were raised in a religious family then you would know not to get married with the same sex. That is the reason people hate gays is because they weren’t raised like others. Different opinions come from everywhere and there is always going to be a conflict about the issue. I also believe that the act of persecuting any one person for their believes, including homosexuality is wrong and completely inhuman. It is God’s responsibility to judge and condemn others. No man should take it upon themselves to judge someone for their sins, unless they are willing to be judged and condemned for their sins. All sins are the same, so premarital sex is equally sinful. But you will be hard pressed to find people these days who has not had premarital sex, they aren’t persecuted. In the second article, Eric was very judgmental and felt like he could condemn others for being homosexual which is wrong. I never feel like it is my place to judge or condemn a homosexual anymore than it is to condemn a thief or a drunk.

The question stands, why do people “hate gays”? Because their different, ignorant, or just wrong? My opinions on this subject are that I don’t hate gay people, I just don’t agree with their beliefs. Growing up in a Christian based home I was always taught that 1 man and 1 women get married. God made Adam and Eve NOT Adam and Steve therefore marriage between a man and a woman is right. “Leviticus 18:21 -22 and thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through [the fire] to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I [am] the LORD. Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.” Also this scripture relates as well, “Hebrews 13:4 let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers.”
Who am I to say that “gay” people are wrong for wanting acceptance and being loved? Everyone deserves to contribute to some happiness within their life and experience LOVE. However, from a Christian standpoint I don’t agree with being gay and I personally wouldn’t do it. I wrote A LOT and it took me a lot of time analyzing, researching, and interpreting scriptures from the bible to write that comment so I’m MOST DEFINITELY not about to retype all of that so in short No.. religion does not condone discrimination and hatred the bible says in Mathew 7:1-3 (how ironic) to
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
No one is perfect and sins are sins that are sins that are sins. With that being said do not judge your neighbor because he believes differently than you because you have flaws and mistakes as well as things you need to fix in your own life. The bible also says in Romans 14:1-3
“As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.”
I’m not going to analyze this scripture AGAIN so to keep it short and sweet do not pass judgment on your neighbor because they decide to lay with the same sex just because you don’t believe in doing so doesn’t mean you have the right to condemn them. If God loves them and he is perfect then how can you hate them when you are of sin?
Yes according to the bible being gay is wrong, and like a peer once said “its a sin and it should never happen” but other things are also sins and they shouldn’t happen either. At the end of the day they are both sins they’re just spelled differently, one person lies with the same sex and the other lies with opposite sex, one is spelled h-o-m-o-s-e-x-u-a-l-i-t-y and the other is spelled f-o-r-n-i-c-a-t-i-o-n. There isn’t a difference.
To answer the second question (gahh I really don’t feel like doing this again…) of “why do people hate gays” its as simple as this. Society. Society is built upon Christianity as much as Mr. Noblitt hates to admit it society is not based on religion but more so on a specific religion, Christianity. Lets face it Christians are the only ones getting all bent up on the issue of gays. People hate gays based solely on the issue of “God says its an abomination” well so are other sins and I AM NOT GOING INTO THAT AGAIN because my peers already pointed that out in previous comments and quite frankly I’m getting tired of this blog post because I’ve done it before -__- anyway according to the article they hate because..

People hate gays because they’re going against what is normal in society. Religion doesn’t condone hatred but if you’re wrong in someone else’s eyes, then you’re just wrong. Most Christians know that being gay is a sin and that’s all they see. They don’t try to understand anything outside of their own mind. It’s like they’ve made up their mind that they don’t want to hear anything about homosexuality except that it’s wrong. People tend to HATE when they don’t UNDERSTAND !!

I believe that in order to make these biblical accusation to hate the gays you need to read the bible word for word. Im looking at these bible verses on these web sites and then i look them up in my bible and if you read on from the phrases posted on the website the following verses completely disprove the point. they take little little prescripts and make plays on words to prove thier point. people in response need to seek the truth out for themselves. Does god really hate the gays? or does he want you to tolerate them but not follow thier rules? Jesus says in Matthew chapter7:1 and on; Judge not, that ye be not judged.

As a christain who reads my bible i think that we need to listen to the teachings of jesus and preach through love not hate, because if we hate others are we not breaking God’s new covenant through the blood of jesus christ? think about it.

Why do people hate gays?
-This question is not easily answered. People hate gays because that is what they are told to do. They hear it in church, they here it from there peers, and they here it from there parents. In the second article it said that it was against “social norms” and therefore they are attacked. After reading the first article i noticed that the two tips he had for congress:
-“Hate” homosexuality and homosexuals
-Follow God’s Commandments with respect to them
This would assume that ever 435 members of congress believe in the same God he does. Those are the religious beliefs in congress:

I think people hate gay people for different reasons. Some hate gays because they are different and people are scared of things that are different sometimes. This is extremely ignorant, but also some people hate gays because they are taught to by closeminded parents, teachers etc. Most people who hate gays don’t really have a justified reason for hating gays, it is just something they dont understand. It is very similar to the racism that went on in the US during the civil rights movement, most people probably couldn’t have intelligently made an argument for hating blacks, it was just out of sheer ignorance and closedmindedness. After reading both articles i am sure enough that i would have to agree with the more logical of the two; that being the second article which states: it is caused, not just by the underlying outright hatred for gays, but also because of peer pressure and various other somewhat abnormal reasoning. In my personal opinion, i see it as being no different than racist or sexist; which generally results from some extremely personal psychological feat early on in life, or even more so just plain ol’ simpleminded ig’nance mmmhhhmmm. I suppose i also have to bring up the already overused class discussion about how religion should not be interpreted as a single portion but as a whole; for when that happens you open it up to and analogous amount of fallacies that couldn’t fill up Gomorrah. And since the only religion i live by is in fact logic, the people that sift through the bible anyway seem to misunderstand that that book was written ages ago and i’m sure most of those sifters don’t mind eating up a whole plate of bacon or crayfish!

I think that people begin to hate gays because all their life, they were taught that marriage should only be between a man and a woman (as the scripture says), and it is looked down upon to go outside that norm. There’s nothing wrong with people believing that marriage should be between a man and woman, but what is wrong is having a strong sense of hatred towards people who chose to not marry the opposite sex. Religion would never tell you to HATE someone. Religion always tells us to be peaceful and treat others the way you would like to be treated. No matter what scripture someone may find out the Bible, they’ll interpret it the way they want to to say it’s the right thing to do by having hatred towards people. Why do people “hate” gays? Maybe people “hate” them because they truly do believe that God hates them. They really do believe that hating, judging, and looking down on homosexuals is right. When it’s what you’ve been taught all of your life, why question it? That’s when talk of ignorance and not thinking for yourself comes in. Their church and their family has told them that “homosexuality” is completely wrong, and most people won’t question that and live their life believing it.

When a pastor or priest stands in front of a congregation and tell them that love can only be between a man and a woman, and people who do otherwise are sinners, THAT is condoning discrimimation. When a religious leader or person tells others that what other people are doing is wrong, then it is encouraging discimination. You wouldn’t hear “hate the gay people” coming from a pastor(or maybe you would) but maybe it is people who teach or talk of religion condoning hate and discrimination, and not the religion itself.

Both articles use the word “hate” profusely. However, in regard to how the Bible says Christians should feel toward sin, the word is used in the wrong context. These articles were both difficult for me to read because they both say that Christians do, or should, “hate” homosexuals. No. The Bible says to hate the sin but love the sinner. In the New Testament, the Bible says in John 13: 34, “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” By saying that we as Christians “hate” someone, we are breaking an explicit commandment. We are told homosexuality is wrong so we turn from that sin. We do not turn from those who commit that sin. Religions do NOT condone hatred. Even Islam, the religion most known for terrorism, was based off of peace and kindness. Ultimately, people hate because they, also, are sinning. We all sin. It’s nothing new. The fact that some Christians decide to broadcast that sin (as seen in the first article) gives all of Christianity a bad name, especially when people do not do the proper research to see the ignorance of these few Christians.

I honestly can say that I do not particularly like gays, but instead I have come to tolerate them. I know what the question here that Noblitt posed but I want to give a little background on the bible. Most of the people on the blog post are not doing the question and I just want to bury their dumb logic first. First of all people have to understand, the bible is thousands of years old. No single person person compiled the bible nor wrote it. People have to understand that the books of the bible were written HUNDREDS OF YEARS APART!!! I get so tired of people talking about the different things in Leviticus, that is one of the oldest books of the bible. A saint didn’t write Leviticus nor an apostle. I don’t even understand why Christians disagree with Jews but still share the views of Leviticus. Plus any smart Christian that knows anything will know that once Jesus came we were to stray away from the laws of the old testament, duh. Did anyone not see the Passion of the Christ, why do you think they hated Jesus so much. Jesus came back and went against the traditional laws of the Jews.

After reading both post I see two reasons for the reasons people hate gays. The first reason described in the first website is the fact that they have deduced the hate gay logic from straight reading the bible. Secondly in the second post most of the people did the hate acts just for the hell of it, almost like a sport. I almost forgot about a third reason posed from the second article regarding one’s upbringing and their exposure to violence. From the second article it’s almost as if the individuals don’t have a real reason to hate gays. The individuals are just bored and ignorant so they do something to displace anger and boredom. In the psychology field they called this displacement and projection. Projection is when you are in the wrong and you just basically rethink the situation so the other person is in the wrong to prove your actions rational. In displacement you have anger or boredom so you displace it into someone or something. What I see like I said in my first paragraph history is repeating itself in some way. Now with the argument why people hate homosexuality is just going back to like when Jesus first came into the world. Nobody knows which side to pick, hate or love the bible says both. “God’s Law is the source of cultural blessings, and these blessings fall even on those who violate God’s Law. And they believe that violence is deserved because of them “violating” “inappropriate behavior”. Adding on to people hating gays is that to them being gay is the same as being a thief. I believe people hate gays because they see as if it is morally wrong. People hate gays because they thing they are satin and disobedient towards god and I don’t believe its true. well to get on the question does religion condone discrimination and hatred?
People hate because they are told to hate. People have their own morals, and when those morals are crossed, it makes them “hate.”
“Thus, Eric was punishing the man not for homosexual acts but for so-called flaunting, that is, refusal to be shamed of deviance.” Is THAT hate? A man confessing that he assaulted a gay person only because he was ‘flaunting’ it. When people go against someone else’s beliefs, it makes them a target of hate.

Most people “hate” gays because they read the bible and it says that its against God’s law to be homosexual. They see it as an issue in our society

In my opinion religion does not condone discrimination and hatred point blank period.. I think that “Many people across the world hate homosexuals because they are different from what people view as normal.
