This movie was great. While I was watching the movie, I was trying to see how the actors related to the actual history figures. David Oyelowo was an awesome actor. He played as Martin Luther King Jr. I also noticed that he tried to pull off a southern accent. The makeup and the lighting of some scenes were perfect. While the March was going on and the people were getting beat, the bruises looked so real. In one scene while Dr. King was talking with someone in a jail cell, the lighting was very dark. The mood was set to be dramatic. It also set a serious tone to the scene.

A thrilling sensation done by Ava DuVernay and her cast. An Oscar award winning movie. This movie enthralled us with the civil rights movement that Martin Luther King Jr. lead. It’s a movie where you can truly see history speak for itself but not be boring at the same time. The actors did an excellent job on portraying their character. This movie also has a Golden Globe for best original song. With so many actors in this movie it made this movie have another vibe to it. The movie didn’t have much humor but much of intense emotions. This movie would take you back to the past and make you feel an emotion you would never think possible. I would re come t this movie to anyone who isn’t afraid to cry.

This movie was one of the best movie I’ve ever seen in my life. Not only because it teaches me to understand more about history.Yet, because it’s so realistic that by watching it you automatically believe the action is happening in front of your own eyes. The authors that played each part as an important civil right person did really good. The climax of this movie i believe was when they were marching and it got to the point where they knew they were going to get beat but that didn’t stop them from marching. While they were getting beat everything seem so real it’s still incredible this really happened to blacks(humans) back then. It was a really emotional movie, to see those woman, men & kids get beat just because they were fighting for their rights as humans was unreal. David Oyelowo did his very best as playing MLK in this movie. Each setting set with the mood and created a good tone just for the right parts.

In Selma, an elderly woman walks slowly up to a clerk to register to vote. The clerk tries to scare her off but she refuses to be dissuaded, so the clerk begins asking his questions? “Can you recite the Constitution’s preamble? “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish …” “How many judges are there in Alabama?” “Sixty-seven.” And just when the admin e thinks she’ll be able to vote he asks “What are their names?” The the clerk stamps DENIED on her registry. Dallas County, is 57% black, but less than 1% of its African-Americans are registered to vote. Only has about 130 people living there. But there’s hope. The Martin Luther King Jr. is coming to town with his organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. If anyone can help shake off the restrictions of voter discrimination in Selma, King can. Although president Lyndon B. Johnson has other political priorities this year. As well as Alabama governor George Wallace has never been a fan of desegregation. And if course there’s friction within the movement: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a group that’s been working for years to get blacks registered in Selma, is a little resentful that King thinks he can succeed where the SNCC could not. There on the streets of Selma, Jim Clark and his group of club-wielding volunteers are waiting for King. They’ll show him and his cronies who actually holds the power in Selma … even if they have to beat them bloody to do it. Hint hint, “Bloody Sunday”.
Some positive elements in the movie are that it is chronologically correct and it has most of the historic context correct except the relationship between Johnson and King, they actually kept contact throughout the movement. Another positive would be that the story is full of heroes and it’s a great movie for people of all ages to watch.

Selma is a genuine portrayal of the the true events that take place thee in the 1960s. It begins with an elderly African American woman attempting to vote. She is denied because she can not name specific unknown members of Alabama’s state government. This opening scene sets the rest of the movie into motion as it is centered around African American voting rights. This movie is predominantly historically accurate albeit a conversation or two with President Kennedy and later President Johnson. Selma included the lesser known details of this period including Dr. King’s closest friends and his affairs, which is something very few people knew prior to the film.
I would highly recommend this movie not only to students but adults as well. Selma teaches people today just how racist the south used to be back then.

My opinion of the movie was that it was it’s an inspirational movie that will move you for, even for those hard hearts. Selma will find your weak spot. The audience that the movie was portraying was all ages, they did a great job make sure all ages could get the big picture. The star actors David, Oprah and Carmen etc… had won a Oscar in my book. You can feel the tension between the race riots just by they way they look. They really sell the story. The overall structure of the movie was historical right and fits the tone and mood of the story. The overall cinematography and lighting could use some work. Some parts of the movie I couldn’t see the actor well and I feel like some sense like that diner was a little cliche. The music was the worst I have ever heard. It didn’t fit the movie sense at all. They were no music, just beats and one instrument objects throughout the whole movie. Overall I give the movie a 8.7.

Selma is a inspiring movie that gives us a real life picture of what actually went on during the march in Selma. The movie is started off with a black woman getting turned down to vote, this was a start of the voting rights for African Americans.
This movie is for the most part is historically right when it comes to the speeches of Mr. King, as well as the historical marches. With the role of President Johnson, this movie portrayed President Johnson perfectly. He gave the allusion he wanted to help, but never actually did anything to help any of the black folks.
I also liked how it gave us an example of Mr. King, with his friends and also his affairs, This movie is one of the best movies I have seen about civil rights.
I recommend this movie to any black, white or hispanic student, that lives in the U.S. For it will give a valid description of a small section of the history of the advancement of black folks.

Selma is a movie about political realities. It inspires us to discuss the here and now. It keeps its focus on the marches, showing the successful completion of the march from Selma to Montgomery, with the movie’s final speech delivered on the steps of the Capitol. Selma managed to capture the complex truth that history is made both in the the streets and behind closed doors, each putting pressure on the other. It tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history. I enjoyed the movie and I highly recommend it!

The movie Selma is a very moving movie that centers around the quest for equal rights for blacks. At the beginning of the movie we see an older woman walk up to a clerk to register to vote. She is then treated very badly and eventually leaves the building, without registering to vote. The progression of the movie is basically showing the struggles that the civil rights leaders had to endure to even just try to get their voices heard, much less get full equality. We see Martin Luther King talk with the president about his concerns, and we see the president more or less disregard the things he said.
This movie is a must-see for all ages, as it is very relevant to the things we are seeing happening right now in our country. In my opinion, if more young people saw this movie, and payed special attention to how Dr. King and his colleagues went about what they were doing, we wouldn’t have nearly as much racial violence as we do in our society right now.
I would definitely recommend this movie to people of all different ages.

Overall I consider Selma as a movie of good direction and overall it sustains a significant plot. Not many know what standing up for your rights is all about. It’s not arguing and getting an attitude when something doesn’t go your way. It’s not using your history as an excuse to pinpoint racism in everything. However Selma really reinforces the idea that Dr. King was striving for and that was to show Blacks had rights and the way to get those rights was to use peace and the truth. Techniques in this movie included harsh mistreatment to reach the hearts of many to remind them of the mistreatment African Americans had and how far we have gotten because of Dr king. The attacking and bloody and sounds of the attacks set a sympathetic tone for the suffering in the movie.
The songs used helped sustain the sympathetic tone and digged into our hearts reminding us all that injustice comes from pride. Injustice can come from anything and everywhere but Selma is a great example of how to react to that injustice and David Oyelowo did a good job in sustaining the idea of non violent acts and movements that lead to Kings success.

Selma the movie gives a heart wrenching account of the events surrounding the infamous march to Selma, Alabama. The movie stays right on cue with all events that surrounded the march featuring David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and Carmen Ejogo as Martin’s wife, Coretta King. Ava highlights the deep underlying tensions that fall on the King household as a result of Martin’s high involvement in the civil rights movement. Threats, negotiations, and friendships are all detailed throughout this riveting story on equality for all people. Tom Wilkinson manages to show the audience the political tension that arose from the Civil Rights Movement through his rugged portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson. Both Tom and Oyelowo did a spectacular job at displaying the relationship between Lyndon and Martin during the time by showing the presidents mixed feeling towards the passing of the civil rights bill. Carmen Ejogo was able to captivate audience through her strong portrayal of Coretta. In her role, she adapts well to the Coretta that many didn’t get to see behind the photos, giving the story a more personal touch.
The movie’s gives a strong opening by reenacting one of the key events that sparked the civil rights movement then it continues to build up to the march with the various protest that were a part of the movement. It gives a high sense of historical validity by adjoining all characters with the activist organizations such as Southern Christian Leadership Conference which was the head organisation for the march on Selma. Ava DuVernay gives the audience just what they want by structuring the movie as close to the events of the Civil Rights Movement as possible.
Graphics were honed to perfection to gives a dramatic, yet enticing take on the movement. The angles, lighting, and music played gives the movie a soul feel that is almost a necessity when producing such a film. Old fashion blues music and modern day soul is combined to really give the audience a sense of time when watching.
When all taken into consideration, Selma was exactly what you would expect from a Civil Rights film. It gives the perfect mix of suspense, drama, and reality that will bring the struggle of millions of African Americans into the theaters, schools and houses of all Americans. This movie is a very fresh tomatoe as Flixster would call it.

Selma did an excellent job at historically showing the events that led up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 getting passed. The characters did a great job at portraying the real civil rights activists. The ‘Bloody Sunday” scene was the hardest to watch because it’s crazy how they could look at black people as if they were nothing and could just brutalize them the way they did and to not feel any regret or shame. It’s scary to think about how racist some white people were back then. I just don’t understand how they could justify to themselves the agonizing pain they instilled on these innocent people standing for what was right. The music played throughout the movie was excellent. The song played at the end of the movie, “Glory” by John Legend was a great inspirational song to end the movie with. The cast director did a great job in casting, because the characters really resembled the real people. I really enjoyed the film. I was a little disappointed in the lighting. At times during the movie it was too dark and you couldn’t really see what was going on. The outfits were great and did a good job at showing how people really dressed back then.

Selma (2014)
Cast: David Oleyowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth, Tom Wilkinson, Oprah Winfrey, Common
Director: Ava DuVernay
Genre: Historic Drama
Selma is a historically and chronologically accurate retelling of the happenings in Selma, Alabama in 1965. There is one exception to the accuracy, which would be the distant and somewhat disagreeable relationship portrayed between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and both President Kennedy and President Johnson. Otherwise, the film should have won every award it was nominated for. DuVernay, as well as the cast, present us with a movie that almost demands the viewer to pay attention and think about the events that inspired this story. King’s character was written in such a way that Oleyowo was allowed to play him as a real man and not the god we often make him out to be. Each character allowed themselves to fully show their emotions, which warrants a congratulations to the cast members for their excellent and very realistic acting skills. The lighting was very good, mostly dark in order to climax the scene when the marchers finally went over the Edmond Pettus Bridge with no trouble, as Oprah Winfrey pointed out on David Letterman’s show about two weeks ago.
The only issues I have with this film is that small bit of inaccuracy with the presidents and that Turnaround Tuesday was not explained as clearly as Bloody Sunday (in my opinion). Also, while the music in the movie was wonderful and very powerful, the placement of some songs was a bit off. I thought that Glory by John Legend and Common would have been better suited when they were crossing the bridge rather than the credits, and maybe adding the Battle Hymn of the Republic somewhere towards the end, maybe the credits, since it was included in Dr. King’s speech in Montgomery.
Personally, I would recommend this movie, not only because of the accuracy but also because it is so moving. I would recommend it to anyone. Due to the brutality and language, I would not say it should be part of younger grade’s civil rights curriculums, but I think it would be okay in high school. I think everyone should see this movie, especially those that do not understand how big the movement was, those that take their rights for granted, do not know their history, or those that try to forget/ sugarcoat this portion of history.
Andddd this is my new fave movie and I’m very sad this is my last blog post. The end 😦

Selma was an intense and wonderfully made movie. Selma focuses around the Civil Rights Movement in Selma, Alabama 1965. This movie spoke volumes about the historical moments that occured between Martin Luther King Jr. and the president. The movie starts off with an old black women registering to vote. When she tries to vote she’s given impossible questions to answer. She’s denied the right to vote and leaves. This scene sets the plot for the rest of the movie. The plot being freedom to vote for all. The movie then continues to show the struggles they face to get where they are today. Even including “Blood Sunday” which was a hard scene for anyone to watch.
The actors protrayed their roles excelently. It was like watching the actual people on the screen. They remained in character and I didn’t spot one bad actor. They made the scenes come to life.
The lighting and effects of the movie were spectacular. Everything was greatly done. If a scene was made to be dark, it was dark. If a scene was made to be light, it was light. The sound effects made you really feel the action in the movie. The soundtrack went great with it too.
So in the end, I highly recommend this movie. Its suitable for all ages with parent guidance and is a must see. It shows the historical context a child may just not get from reading a book. It allows everyone to really see what happened. This movie was a real eye opener.

Noblitt I’m not going to do this assignment, but since this is my last blog post ever I’ve decided to write you a letter. Dear D. Nobz,
I’m so glad that I’ve gotten to have you as a teacher throughout high school. You are such a huge inspiration to me. I admire that you tell your students about your past and the mistakes you’ve made so that we can use your lessons as a reference in our own lives. I admire that as a teacher you know that school isn’t for everyone, and that (sometimes) you encourage us to follow our own dreams even if they don’t involve going to college. However, when you see potential in a person you push them to their ultimate capability. You’re probably one of five teachers I’ve had in my entire life that actually cares about their students personal lives and problems. I’ve learned how to write college level essays in your class. I also realized how much I’m going to hate college/ growing up while doing my IA junior year. Your class has seriously prepared me for what’s coming up next in my life, and I’ll always regret not going full IB when I had the chance. I’ll never forget you telling us to “Read the freaking book” or to “Share with everybody” or that “We’ll never be anything in life” even though we know you don’t mean it and I’ll definitely never forget you being the teacher that made it possible for me to go to my senior prom. I look up to you more than anyone, and I hope that one day I can be as great of a person as you are. Thank you for preparing all of us, and being a listening ear when we need you to be. You’re what all teachers should strive to be.
P.S I thought about actually writing on paper this for a long time, but I figured you would lose it and as teachers at Huss love to tell us “the internet is forever”
P.P.S Selma was a great movie.

Selma was an amazing movie that expressed what happened during the civil rights movement. This movie was very intense and full of strong emotion. The cast was excellent. It felt like you were part of this civil rights movement with all the history and drama. There were a few inaccuracies including the relationships between Dr King and Johnson. I feel like all the characters did very well. All characters expressed distinct emotion which brought the movie together, as I imagine that’s what happened in the 60’s too.The story unfolded very well with the moments of riots and peace.

I can honestly say I really enjoyed watching this movie. I regret missing out on watching it the first time. Only a select few films have made it on my “to watch again” list and this is one of them. The cast was amazing and everyone played their part well. Especially David Oyelowo who portrayed king himself. What I really enjoyed about this movie was that it stayed true to the events that occurred in Selma. The audience also got to see the personal life of king as well. This movie gave an inside perspective of what Dr. king and his associates were like. I even liked how the movie focused on some of the other characters as well, who had just as much an impact as Dr. King. The director did an amazing job by tugging on the heart strings and emotions of not just the black audience, but all races as well. The bridge scene was very brutal but it reflected the real life event. I would absolutely recommend this movie to anyone. I think it should be displayed in high schools to hold as a reminder of how far America has come.

Director: Ava DuVernay
Genre: Biography/ Drama/ History
Bloody Sunday was a dramatic and horrifying event in all of history during the Civil Rights Movement that occurred in 1965 in Selma, Alabama. It was a physical attack on peaceful protesters by local residents, police, and city officials due to prejudices and racism. This event led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. could never be recreated for the big screen but in Selma (2014) it was as accurate and motivating as it possibly could be even as it happened nearly 50 years ago. It also captured the events preceding and proceeding the March from Selma to Montgomery as well as documenting the life of MLK played by the extremely similar resembling actor David Oyelowo.
The movie depicts MLK’s consistent attempt to achieve Voting Rights for African-Americans in the south. As Oprah Winfrey plays the crucial role of Annie Lee Cooper who is wrongly denied her right to vote due to local officials, events captured in the movie are recorded leading up to the march to Montgomery. The events lead to an eventual passing of the Civil Rights Act, which outlawed discrimination, by President Lyndon B. Johnson played by actor Tom Wilkinson and achieving MLK’s purpose of leading and organizing the marches.
The movie itself is regarded highly by other popular movie reviews as it received a 99% voting on Rotten Tomatoes. I believe this is due simply to the accurate depiction of the events as they were almost recreated entirely. The accuracy of the movie is achieved by using actors who resembled their characters by voice, actions, character, and even physical features that were almost dead on. Another contribution to the accuracy of the movie is achieved through filming in similar settings as well as the same exact bridge that the march was held on in Selma, Alabama. The movie is also captivating to one’s sympathetic side as it completely controls your emotions the entire time. Whether you are fired up and motivated after one of Dr. King’s inspiring speeches, in tears due to the cruel murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson, or simply drew to the intense suspense of events despite them already happening. The movie is directed, written, and produced to a certain level of perfection that factors such as lighting and music are overlooked by the audience due to the intriguing plot itself, but this does not decrease the legitimacy of how flawless these features truly are.
In conclusion, Selma (2014) is a must see movie for all ages and can be marveled at from a historical and dramatic perception. It could be recommended as curriculum and a valid source for history courses in school and definitely should be watched for the entertainment elements it contains. I don’t see how this remarkable movie could possibly get a bad review!

Prior to watching this movie in class, I had never cared to watch this movie. Once we started watching Selma in class, I loved it automatically. All of the actors did a fantastic job of acting like the characters. They did so well, I felt like i was going on the journey with them throughout the whole movie. The setting was perfect as they filmed at the exact location of the marches. The lack of music that was used in this film brought out a lot of emotion. The lack of music helps the audience feel more engaged. I love the scene in the beginning when the woman was trying to vote and she was getting all of the questions right until they got extremely hard for really anyone to answer. I high recommend this film for anyone. It is very important for people to watch so we can gain a new perspective. I give Selma a 8.5 rating.

Selma is a movie dealing with the struggle for voting rights in the black community during a time of segregation, and inequality. While giving some insight on Martin Luther king and his role in civil the civil rights movement. And of course the famous march on Selma. When watching this movie I could relate it to the rioters in ferguson. It’s crazy and pretty ironic how vice versa it is. In the movie certain scenes really stuck out to me. Especially the scene about “Bloody Sunday) This one event showed most of the world just how, cruel black people were treated. As if they were nothing, and not human. And even with white community, and officers coming at them with everything they had. They still refrained from violence. Ava did an excellent job not trying to make the movie so much about King as a whole, bit about the movement at hand. And more so showing his Contributions, and everyone else involved. I feel the movie had a great message in regards to, violence not being the answer. But staying consistent, and staying united can accomplish way more. Selma is basically about Martin Luther King, and his followers fighting (Nonviolently ) for the right as citizens to vote. While undergoing numerous struggles. Viewers will find this movie not only entertaining but, educational. You can feel the passion, anger, hurt and determination in each character being played. Actors really know, and understand their character’s role. Ava did a great job when casting. Viewer will really enjoy this movie. 5 stars.

Selma tells the tale of the civil rights war. By using the past to tell the story of Selma to the world, the director is able to successfully convey the message. DuVernay directs the movie with such a great realistic approach to it, that it makes you feel like these events were only yesterday. Selma literally made me shed a few tears. It made me realize, as the watcher, that this actually happened. That this had only occurred 50 years ago. I guess I have a connection to the movie personally because the civil rights of back then are like the gay rights of now. I know that is not the same oppression. However, there is still that same feeling that overcomes me because I can some of relate to how they felt. David Oyelowo’s portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. was amazing. He had everything done, right to Dr. King’s accent. This movie is honestly one of the best ones I have seen in the longest time. Selma made me feel bittersweet because even though I know it is different today, there are still people who feel like the majority of the white population did then. I think the Ava Duvernay was trying to show that race is still an issue today. I think she was successful with her message.

Selma (2014)
Cast: Carmen Ejogo, David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Tom Wilkinson, etc.
Director: Ava DuVernay
Genre: Biography/Drama/History
The movie Selma engaged many events that closely depicted the acts of racism and resembled the life of MLK, through the actor David Oyelowo and many others. Bloody Sunday was a traumatic and terrifying event in all of history that displayed the anger of local residents, policemen, and officials of the city but yet the courage and determination of protestors. This Movement occurred in Selma, Alabama in 1965 and opened the eyes of many human beings. The movie could not exactly portray the movement that MLK led but yet recreated it very accurate and moving to society. The protestors voiced their want of equality through innocent marching and speeches made. The movie grasped the attention of many viewers, impacting their mindset and knowledge.
The movie displays MLK’s frequency of fighting for the Voting Rights of not only African Americans but for people of all races. Though the movie focused greatly on African Americans, its underlying meaning says that he’s also trying to succeed for people of all colors. The movie shows Oprah Winfrey, who plays the role of Annie Lee Cooper, being denied at the registration desk of voting because of her skin color. This event and others encouraged MLK and many other activists to achieve equality among African Americans and be granted the right to vote. As the movie progressed, President Lyndon B. Johnson, played by the actor Tom Wilkinson, announced his action to grant African Americans the right to vote. This supported the accomplishment of MLK and protestors and encouraged them to continue fighting for what they believed in.
Selma (2014) is a captivating movie that engages the viewer’s attention the entire time. Due to the lighting, actors, and scenes of the movie, it creates an accurate recreation of what occurred almost 50 years ago. When watching this, it will cause such strong emotions to flare such as crying, anger, laughter, and more. Scenes such as the killing of Jimmie Lee or when the protestors’ kneeled down on the bridge all bring a feeling that keeps the viewer’s attention until the end. Even the closing song, Glory sung by John Legend and the rapper Common moves the audience just as the movie did. This here is such an intriguing movie that must be seen by all ages and even used in history classes to reflect on how society has changed as a whole and history is created every single day. This is a fantastic movie and is highly recommended by people all over!

Cast: David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Tim Roth, Oprah Winfrey

I loved this movie. The acting was superb and the cinematogrophy was beautiful. The element of light was utilized very well in this film: The scenes were very dark and shadowy whenever King was facing a particularly difficult inner conflict, and full of light when he was sure of himself.
There was a high level of emotion throughout the whole movie, and there were many times that I really had to try to keep from crying, specifically the violent scenes of Selma and King’s dramatic speech at the end of the movie.
Whenever I watch a film based on historical events, I find myself feeling suspicious of the accuracy of events and people. Many of the events depicted in the film were very private, so there is no way to know for sure whether King actually interacted with Lyndon Johnson or Coretta Scott King in the way that the film depicted.
I’m glad that this film addressed King’s affairs. King is usually depicted as a morally impeccable being who always does the right thing and makes the right decision. King was an amazing person who did a great deal of good for our country, but nobody is perfect, and he would not want to be thought of as a god.
I think that the timing of this film is impeccable. With all the recent events in the news, we need to be reminded of all the struggles that people of color have gone through in this country. We also need to keep in mind that with the right leadership, public support, and willpower, any movement can make change.

SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The guy playing MLK looks nothing like MLK but anyway, The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson Tom Wilkinson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernays SELMA tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

Ava DuVernary beautifully creates an important moment in history on film by using the incredible story of Martin Luther King Jr. (played by David Oyetokunbo) and other leaders of the civil rights movement. You will be captured by every moment of this movie, because unlike some other historic films which fails to keep the audience interested, it uses pivotal moments of the Selma march to keep you glued to the television with your heart pounding and tears rolling. The violence portrayed was the icing on the cake because it shone a light on the reality of what occurred more than often in that time period, yet it was done tastefully. An aspect that I enjoyed the most was the picture of the movie. It was as if it were really filmed in that actual time period. Although it’s a history movie, and many children despise learning their history, I would encourage people of all ages to take a moment out of their lives to watch Selma. Learn your history and be entertained at the same time.

Selma did an outstanding job at historically and accurately showing the events that led up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 getting passed. The cast that played the characters did a fantastic job at portraying the real civil rights activists. The ‘Bloody Sunday” scene was the most disturbing and hardest to watch because of how they could look at people of color as if they were less or nothing and could just brutalize them the way they did and to not feel any regret or shame. Some white people were really racist back then. The music played throughout the movie was very entertaining. The song played at the end of the movie, “Glory” by John Legend was a great inspirational song to end the movie with. The cast director did a great job in casting, because the characters really looked like the real people. I really loved this movie and there was no disappointments.

The movie is informative and shows the value of MLK with the marches through Selma. It reflects on the conflicts and solutions contributed my the NAACP, SCLC, and SNCC associations. It informs the watchers of the movement and of how blacks were mistreated and abused. Many actors and actresses played roles of important people who took part in the March through Selma alongside MLK. Over 50 years ago several devoted people to equalizing rights knew that there were both positive and negative consequences to the decisions. My prior knowledge to Selma was not much, but after watching I got a better feeling. I know it was made more dramatic, but the violence had no comparison in what actually occurred. I recommend this movie to those who enjoy action as well as civil rights.

I recently watched the movie Selma in class. This was about Martin Luther King and the civil rights march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery in 1965. The movie was directed by Ava DuVernay and starred David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King.
This movie was mainly about how King and other campaigners band together to confront the racism of the south as they demanded the right to vote. Protestors were injured and some even died from police, KKK, and other who hated blacks. The confrontation took place on Edmund Pettus bridge, spanning the Alabama river, a Rubicon of American history.
Martin Luther King only wanted to do a peaceful demonstration while other wanted to use violence. The movie documents the campaign in 1965 to register black voters. King was plotted against but still committed to stand on his ground against violence. The movie at times was very intense and sad as it showed the disgusting side of racism.
My overall opinion of the movie was that this was a great movie, very in-depth and inspiring. I felt this showed a real life picture of the civil rights movement and all that they endured. I loved the music section for this movie as it was relevant and really gave the movie dept.

Main actors: David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Andre Holland and Lorraine Toussaint.
Selma chronicles the tumultuous 3-month period in which MLK went to Selma. This also resulted in a March called “Bloody Sunday”. David Oyelowo gave a powerful performance, however his imitation southern accent was a bit rusty. Tom Wilkinson also gave a great performance. Oprah playing a “small” role had a big impact on the film. The cinematography was excellent with a great variety of action shots and good close-ups during the speeches. This movie is full of suspense and surprise. Selma beautifully portrays a hard time in our past, even bringing notice to similar issues that still exist today. Each actor/actress in the film engulfed their role and really evoked the passion and seriousness of this time. Along with great acting and cinematography this movie was obviously under great direction.

The movie is: Selma. It came out in 2014.
The director is a woman named Ava Duvernay.
Some of the main actors include:
David Oyelowo-MLK
Oprah Winfrey-Annie Lee Cooper
Tim Wilkinson- Pres. Lyndon Johnson
The genre is mainly a drama film with a touch of a biography.
Now for the actual review…
I didn’t totally finish the movie and I also missed a few of the main parts but I can still write a semi-good/accurate review. I would first off like to give my own opinion of the movie. I personally liked it. It’s not one of my favorites but that doesn’t mean it was bad. One of the things that I did like about the movie, was its historical context. Keep the history in the movie and tell all the facts about it. Let people really know what happened during that time. And when it comes to that, they really hit the nail on the head. The music stayed appropriate with the tone, even if it was just a little beat. The lighting of the movie was my only concern and it wasn’t even that big of an issue. I just had a few problems at times when they were in houses like MLK and such where the background and foreground was very dark. Other than that, I have no further issues.
The story takes place during the highlights of the civil rights era with many references to MLK and other political activists looking for equal rights. Overall I can say that is was a well put together movie. It was a very well/professional built film.(Even though I have never heard of that director).

The movie Selma was about the marches from Selma to Montgomery freely about voting restrictions in the south.
This lead to the Bloody Sunday march in which they were beaten, tear gassed, and killed for trying to do a fairly legal thing. All the Actors and Actresses did a good job, but this movie was made last year so the accents were a little off as was some of the historical content. The cinematography was pretty good during this film but there weren’t a lot of action shots that just kept the reader on their seats. However the music in the movie was really good in the sense that they made it pertain to the audience and the historical time period. The Movie takes place in the midst of the civil rights movement and overall was historically accurate, emotionally moving, and physically compelling and I, personally, would give it a 9.7 out of 10.

Cast: David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Carmen Ejogo.
Director: Ava DuVernay
Genre: Historical Drama
Oyelowo really hits his stride with this account of Martin Luther King’s battle for black voting rights, and the historic 1965 marches from Selma to Montgomery. What you don’t get are any of King’s celebrated speeches because they are owned by the MLK estate. Yet so moving is Oyelowo’s performance that we forget the constraints around which the film is straddling, the delivery is convincing enough to make us believe that we are hearing an authentic voice rallying the crowds in the churches, the streets, and the living rooms of America. The supporting cast are strong with Carmen Ejogo lending warmth and courage to the key role of Coretta Scott King (the strain on their marriage is a central theme), while co-producer Oprah Winfrey has strength in her portrayal of the indomitable Annie Lee Cooper. But it’s Oyelowo who really holds it all together, raising what could have become a drama of workaday worthiness into something genuinely inspiring. The history may be a little skewed, but Oyelowo keeps our attention focused on the real story in triumphant fashion. This powerful movie manages to soar, reminding us all of how a determined movement led by a passionate preacher helped right one of America’s greatest wrongs.

Selma is a drama film about the events that occurred during the march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery in 1965. The film captures the audience by showing the cruel reality of the civil rights movement during this time period. Dr. King’s goal was to secure the voting rights to all people through non-violent protests, despite the heinous crimes happening to the African Americans (or anyone who joined in the protests). The whole cast portrayed their characters very well, with superb emotion. The emotion the actors showed, I feel, is what really made the movie so captivating. It made it feel like I was in this time period. The horrid scenes of abuse to those taking place in these peaceful marches made me cringe; and that’s how you know the movie’s good. The violent scenes are so realistic it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. The historical accuracy of the movie is amazing. I feel it will be very hard for any movie about the civil rights movement to beat this one. 10/10, would recommend.

The movie Selma was a great movie in my opinion. It was a great movie because it kept me intrigued throughout the entire movie. In the movie it actually showed you not realistic but what it was like when the police would beat people , how they marched and everything that we read happened. The timing of this movie coming out was during a time period was during the shooting and i think if some people would watch it and try some of the things they did in the movie when they protest they might get their point across. The events that take place like when the elderly lady is taking the registration test to vote and she had to name people in Alabama’s government. I think that set like the mood that there was always going to be that hateful attitude through out the movie. The movies graphics were amazing and it just made the movie that much better . The movie did a great job leading up to the Civil Rights Act. The music in the movie i think was excellent , it was just right with the tones , attitudes and circumstances. In my opinion it was great and i would give it a 9/10. I would recommend this movie to anyone because it could change their outlook on things.

The movie Selma is a good movie to watch if your in historic movements. The character that plays Dr. King does a great job at playing his part. One of my favorite things about this movie is that it takes actual clips from the march and places in the movie instead of “re-filming” it. To end this short review I will state that history has always been my worst subject making it really hard for me to find an interest in the events that happened long ago but this movie caught my attention and held it through out the whole movie. Great job director Ava DuVernay. I would give this movie a 8.5/10 on the rating scale.

Director: Ava DuVernay
Synopsis: David Oyelowo stars as Martin Luther King Jr. In this first time film King is trying to prepare people for equality and get the right to vote for blacks, starting in Selma.
Review:
This film was accurate for the most part. Also, the parts were played well by these actors. It was a real life portrayal of segregation and racism in the south during that time period. It also showed a perfect demonstration of how King was a man of non violence. He provoked violence but he did not allow his people to fight back. This was portrayed throughout the movie. The only critique I have is that in real life King and Johnson had a pretty decent relationship and Johnson did what he could and a lot to help KIng. This was not portrayed by the movie. In fact, it looked like Johnson was holding back and it also portrayed a more intense relationship between the two. Considering this to be the only critique, it was an overall well written and directed movie.

Selma was a very good movie with many historical aspects throughout. I enjoyed it thoroughly and there were not parts where the movie lost me. It kept me interested the entire time. This movie is not for children but I think that students in middle school could watch it if they could get over the language.
The movie shows Dr.Martin Luther King’s plans to help African Americans able to vote without restrictions. It shows the struggles he has with the President, his wife and other groups.
The actors did a good job at portraying the historical characters from that time, especially Dr.King. The actors acted as though this was happening right now.
The movie followed in order of the timeline of the Selma to Montgomery march. It started with everything leading up to the march up to the actual march. The ending speech and the way it was presented was very nice.
At times the lighting was off and it was hard to see what was going on but the sound effects and talking took care of that. The majority of the time though, the lighting was fine and helped set the mood of the movie. I did enjoy the music that was played during the movie.

I was actually very surprised with the movie Selma. I had a typical stereotype that it would be like any other historical movie, but the plot was very flowing and kept the audience interested. I actually enjoyed the movie a lot. It definitely kept me intrigued throughout the whole movie. I was surprised by how much it taught me about the events that occurred at Selma, Alabama when I went home and read about it later. Selma is definitely a must see, if you haven’t seen it.
The actors played an amazing role of each of their characters. You could tell that they were honored to play the part that they had and were determined to make it as realistic as they could. I think this was one of the leading factors that made the movie so interesting. It almost felt as if it were live feed of the time period.
However, the only down fall of the movie would be the lighting. At times it was hard for me to distinguish between the characters because of how dark it was in the movie. Majority of the movie had dark lighting and it was really hard to see at times. But overall I enjoyed Selma very much and it was a very well produced movie. I will definitely make my grandparents watch it with me later on!

Selma was actually a great movie and i enjoyed watching every bit of it. When I heard about the movie I thought it wasn’t going to be historically accurate, but most of it is. Throughout the entire movie, I didn’t watch one boring part and that’s the most important aspect in watching movies. The 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery marches are among the most important landmarks in the American Civil Right Movement, and as such this story is full of heroes.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s cagey leadership, unmatched charisma and unwavering commitment to nonviolence became critical ingredients in effecting change. Without the moral high ground that King so ferociously defended and the unparalleled attention that he drew whenever he came to town, one wonders whether Selma’s story would’ve ended differently. Throughout this movie, we see just how committed King is to the cause, and how much he’s willing to sacrifice to see it through. Everyone of the actors were amazing in how they performed their parts.
I would recommend this movie to any and everyone who is interested in the civil rights movement and also those who aren’t.

Selma was an inspiring movie that gave many viewers an insight on the black men and women in Selma, Alabama. This movie focuses on the equal rights African Americans should have. The segregation and discrimination and racism was a main issue and priority for Martin Luther King Jr. to work on, along side James Bevel, and the president, Johnson. The actors played their parts very well and made me realize the extent of cruel, humiliating, brutal things that African Americans had to go through on a daily basis, just because people thought they were not equal because of the color of their skin. This movie makes you realize that Freedom had came with a price at one point in time.

Director Ava DuVernay does a great job in heightening the tension between characters by adding verbal threats and some graphic abuse between the people that gave the movie that special interest. The whole movie and individual scenes are well played by the actors and led greatly by the director to allow it all to flow without interruption. This movie is a movie that is worth watching with some great historical facts and to learn some of the things that King has done.

A beautiful enactment of MLK Jr.’s role and struggle within the Civil Rights movement and the impact of the march from Selma to Montgomery on the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The historical depiction of the racial state of Selma is heart wrenching and captivating.
David Oyelowo’s performance of MLK Jr. has all the character of King save the power of his voice. This makes the scenes of MLK’s speeches not quite as moving, since they were built to fit the inspirational voice of King. Other actors notably conveyed the anguish or hatred and ignorant condescension of their respective characters. The use of the FBI’s loggings makes the story real and vivid. Including the issue of King’s time with other women was something to be appreciated, as many forget this part of his character yet the flaws bring King down to a more human, relatable level that can really impact an audience. The scenes were also executed in an impressive fashion. The depictions of the bombing in the church, with its sudden prescence of the explosion and slowed, clear view of moving debris, as well as Bloody Sunday, with the haze of tear gas, slow motion of beatings, and moving perspective of the scene as a whole, were particularly notable.

Selma was an amazing and inspiring film. Nobody could have played Martin Luther King Jr better than David Oyetokunbo. David was dedicated, motivated, and connected with his role. The reenactments of the marches were beyond beautiful, yet horrid. The movie touches ones heart. It signifys what African Americans went through during the 1960s. Some viewers would agree and disagree on the way white folk and negroes acted. The white folk were beyond racist to what we see now a days.

This movie was by far one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. It’s very educational, but in a non-boring and interesting way. Some of the history was a little off, like the way Dr. Martin Luther King talked to the president. It was historically inaccurate. In the movie, it was displayed that Martin spoke to the president with hostility and no one could ever speak to him like that. The civil rights movement was displayed in a way that is touching to the heart. The movie was very graphic but it just strengthens the realness of the movement. Definitely a movie to see!!

It’s a movie that is great for anyone who can understand and appreciate the historical context of the movie. It’s a great watch and allows for the viewer to better understand the marches that occurred. Even for someone who fully understands the marches, it’s a great visual. The actors in the movie portrayed the people during this time perfectly, they showed how strong and persistent they were about the right to vote. The Movie “Selma” did a fantastic job of portraying the historical context of march to Selma and how it was brought about. The movie goes back through time and events that led up to the march. Duvernay does a good job of giving accurate representation of the events. With that being said, that and the great actors help the viewer understand. it gives a good visual representation of history; not just a boring textbook. The actors gave a good idea of the cruelty that was happening at the time. The use of the FBI logging helped give context to what was happening seemingly “behind the scenes”. MLK’s actions were tracked and it was life ruining. . This movie is a movie that is worth watching with some great historical facts, it helps to give context and a more fissionable view of history.
